Tatsuya, Artarmon

Tatsuya Japanese Sushi Bar

If there is a suburb in Sydney that can pass as a haunt for good, honest Japanese food, then Artarmon in the lower north shore would be it.

The addition of Tatsuya, which already has an outlet in West Ryde, complements Wakana, the yakiniku restaurant next door.

Across Hampden road on the other side of Artarmon train station is Sushiya which has since taken on an additional shoplot next to its original joint. Two doors down is Rahmen Genki, famous for churning out bowl after bowl of piping hot ramen noodles to the locals.

Dining room at Tatsuya, Artarmon

The previous dimly-lit room that housed a Korean restaurant has been transformed into a bright and stylish place with a sushi counter to gaze at the deft skills of the sushi chef.

There is a variety of sake that are on display in the wall cabinet in the dining room.

2012 Wirra Wirra Mrs Wigley Grenache Rose

2012 Wirra Wirra Mrs Wigley Grenache Rose

A 2012 Wirra Wirra Mrs Wigley Grenache Rose is dry with subtle hints of raspberry and strawberry. It has a good, lingering finish and this kind of style is my personal favourite to go with Japanese sushi and sashimi.

Corkage here is $2.50 per person but the wine glasses are better than most neighbourhood restaurants.

Compliments of the house ~ hot miso soup

Compliments of the house ~ hot miso soup

A good touch by the restaurant on this cold evening is providing customers with a piping hot bowl of miso soup.

Simple gestures like this would go a long way in the competitive food scene in Sydney and earn brownie points in my books.

Salted deep fried whitebait $13

Salted deep fried whitebait $13

Our entree of salted deep fried whitebait is one of the best I’ve had in Sydney, whether it is done Western or Asian style.

The batter is light and crispy and there is hardly a hint of greasiness. A squeeze of lemon juice onto the whitebait and I’m continuously popping these little fish into my mouth. This dish is beer food made in heaven.

Agedashi tofu $8.50

Agedashi tofu $8.50

I don’t believe any Japanese restaurant can screw up a simple bowl of agedashi tofu and Tatsuya is no exception.

Crisp and light batter on the outside and silken soft inside, these golden tofu nuggets are topped with chopped shallots and bonito flakes. I doubt if I can ever get sick of this bowl of comfort food.

Grilled sushi set $22

Grilled sushi set $22

A grilled sushi set consists of kingfish, salmon and scallops sushi brushed with teriyaki sauce and lightly blowtorched for that unmistakable smoky flavour. Drizzled with Japanese mayonnaise, every piece is pure yumminess with a bit of light soy and wasabi.

Dragon roll $18

Dragon roll $18

Dragon roll is grilled eel sushi rolled up and sliced into bite-size pieces, topped with tobiko or flying fish roe and drizzled with teriyaki sauce and Japanese mayonnaise.

Avocado and seafood stick complete this delicious mouthful with a few slices of pink, pickled ginger.

California roll $12

California roll $12

I remember the California roll from our visit to Tatsuya’s West Ryde outlet.

Each piece of sushi is ladened with tobiko which is one of my favourite Japanese ingredients.

California roll $12

California roll $12

Each piece of sushi is rolled up with tuna, salmon and avocado. The sushi and sashimi are fresh and I would recommend all of the dishes we have ordered thus far.

Mixed tempura combination $17

Mixed tempura combination $17

The mixed tempura combination consists of slices of eggplant, sweet potato onion and prawns. Lightly deep-fried, the batter is crispy even in its dipping sauce.

Wafu steak $18.50

Wafu steak $18.50

The wafu steak is a piece of scotch fillet grilled on a cast iron plate sitting on thick slices of onions. This is a good way to prevent overcooking the meat which comes medium although I would have preferred it a little more rare.

Grilled fish salad $13.50

Grilled fish salad $13.50

I found the raw taste of sliced cabbage in the grilled fish salad to be a bit of a mismatch with the fish. And the crunchy texture of the cabbage is also not the best combination.

Grilled salmon roll $15

Grilled salmon roll $15

Grilled salmon roll is as tasty and pretty as it looks on the platter.

I highly recommend Tatsuya because the seafood is super fresh, simple, tasty and bloody good value for money.

Thumbs up to yet another good suburban Japanese restaurant in Sydney.

  1. Artarmon feels like the other side of the world for me. It sure is a trek so I haven’t had the chance to visit anything around the area. I’m not the biggest sashimi fan so I can’t say where exactly has the best produce, but I find my go to place for japanese food is masuya!

  2. Everything looks delicious! Love a good salmon roll. Wirra Wirra is a good drop too!

  3. Looks like some good quality Japanese food. I agree – it is practically impossible to find bad agedashi tofu (and this is a very very good thing.)

  4. missklicious says:

The food looks great here, nice and fresh! Seems like there have been quite a few new additions since my last visit to Artarmon.

  5. Amy Tong says:

I adore Japanese food and all the dishes you had there made me drooled a little. Those deep fried whitebait, yummy sushi. Okay, I better go get myself some Japanese for lunch tomorrow. 😛 Thank you so much for sharing.

  6. You can never have too many good Japanese restaurants can you!

  7. Juliana says:

Wow, the sushi plates look great…and I can really tell that this is a very nice place to have Japanese food…I always look at the ratio of fish and rice :)
    Now I am hungry!
    Have a great week!

  8. Raymund says:

That white bait looks like it was carefully been prepared, I will try that at home one day

  9. Love the japanese food in the lower north shore. the chefs are so amazing. one of my favourites would still have to be masuya seafood restaurant. affordable and decent quality japanese food.

  10. Stud used to live in Artarmon before it became a food mecca. I miss living over there – its such a beautiful suburb. We should go back and try out Tatsuya – I have heard such great things and your photos look fab!

  11. Hi Chopinand! I’m fine, thank you for asking! :) A lot of things have changed in the past months – I finished studies and married and moved and started a PhD and and currently eating a vegan diet again – so there has been a lot of excitement, but overall I’m very happy!

I always love how beautifully the food is prepared and arranged in Japanese cuisine! 😀

    How are you doing yourself?

  12. Charmaine says:

Thanks for recommending this restaurant. We’ve been a few times and it’s definitely good value for money. Bright and clean too.

    • Chopinand says:

      Dear Charmaine,

Glad you liked this place. The food is good and prices so fair and honest.

  13. James Baker says:

Went there on a regular basis. $10 for beef n miso soup.

    NOT ANYMORE!

Went there today and it cost me $11 ($1 more) and NO MISO SOUP!

    FAIL! FAIL! FAIL!
