“How did you manage to get a booking at Tetsuya’s so easily? I thought these fine dining restaurants are usually booked out for months!” I exclaim.

“Don’t get your hopes up too high, we are not going to Tetsuya’s” Mysaucepan says. The restaurant is called Tatsuya, not Tetsuya’s”.

“Oh well, it should be quite good since it sounds like Tet’s, wouldn’t it?” I joked.

“We shall soon find out wouldn’t we” she says.

Located just off busy Victoria road in West Ryde, Tatsuya is a little sushi bar next to a petrol station. Not the most glamorous of locations but once inside, the restaurant is cosy and service is snappy and efficient.

Mixed sashimi plate $16

Mixed sushi platter $16

A mixed sushi platter comes with ten piece of assorted salmon, tuna and king fish sushi. After my first piece of sushi, I already know I would be coming back to this place.

The sushi is super fresh and at $16,  this restaurant is what I like about the humble neighbourhood eatery – good, honest food at reasonable prices.

California roll $12

California roll $12

A California roll is not the usual nori cone filled with rice and raw fish. Instead, it comes with ten pieces of rolled up sushi rice, salmon tuna and avocado laced with tobiko.

Portions are generous and I know this would be one place I would be coming back quite often.

California roll $12

Except for the nori which I love for its crispy and umami taste, I think this presentation is quite appetising with the bright orange specks of fish roe.

I really don’t mind a California roll in the form of sushi pieces with a pair of chopsticks over a hand roll.

Mixed tempura $17

Mixed tempura $17

A mixed tempura comes with two plump king prawns and an assortment of sweet potato and other kinds of vegetables in a light and crispy deep-fried batter.

It’s a simple and regular tempura dish that one would find in most Japanese restaurants and I can’t fault it in anyway.

Yakiniku beef $14

Yakiniku beef $14

A yakiniku beef comes in thin slices of beef that is nicely seared and sliver of onions, chives and carrot. It can almost be passed off as a stir-fried dish in a Chinese restaurant but it’s tasty nevertheless.

I’m impressed a Japanese restaurant in Sydney managed to trade under that name! Food looks great though! :)

  2. haha I’m sure there would be plenty of people out there that would have the same thoughts about tetsuyas and tatsuya! Always love a good japanese feed. Sadly there arent any good ones close to home, but I do love visiting masuya in the city. It’s not necessarily cheap but i think it always consistent with the food.

  3. Baby Sumo says:

Nice place! WE just had Japanese yesterday too… a whole load of sashimi!

  4. I thought the same thing Celia did – I can’t imagine them allowing a name so close. I swear your photographs could make a cheese sandwich look dreamy. :)

  5. Hehe I wonder how many people mistake it for Tetsuya’s?! :)

  6. Sissi says:

Haha! I wish we had “casual sushi bars” here. There is only a fast food chain I like in my city and frankly apart from one expensive restaurant, this is my favourite place for sushi and maki. I have heard about Tetsuya (the famous place) because I have seen a cookery book by him I think. I suppose THE Tetsuya’s restaurant is a bit more pricey 😉

  7. I almost misread that as Tetsuya’s too! Seems like you found a hidden gem!

  8. Both names are common boy’s name in fact. And I wonder if they are owners name… Tetsuya-san and Tatsuya-san making sushi in the same area!

I love how fresh raw fish looks! I miss eating sushi at a small sushi restaurant!

      Dear Nami,

Tetsuya Wakuda is one of Australia’s most famous celebrity chefs and he is the owner of Tetsuya’s in Sydney.

  9. Juliana says:

Wow, another feast…I love your sushi…especially when the rice ball are totally covered by the slice of the fish…yum!
Awesome pictures as always…have a great week :)

  10. Great find! Definitely going to check this place out one night since it’s fairly close to home :)

  11. How funny :) there’s the famous Testuya and then there’s Tasuya ~ It looks like a great sushi bar! I wish we had more in Melbourne sighhh we don’t have many here :(

  12. bams Kitchen says:

This restaurant looks very nice and the sushi looks fresh. I loved sushi while I lived in Japan and miss it now that I am gone as the restaurants in HK just can’t make it the the same way. Take care, BAM

  13. Sadly the best sushi in my neck of the woods is sushi train :( or my place when I could be bothered :)

  14. Hahah love the name! My fave sushi bar would have to be Sushi Hotaru in the city although I must admit I do not frequent there as much as I would like to!

What a timely post! Am trying to find a good Jap place within 10km of North Ryde for a farewell lunch for one of my managers. Looks great!

The sushi at Tatsuya looks great.
They have a few other good quality, casual sushi bars around the North, such as Hukuya in Eastwood and Tokyo Sushi Bar in Epping. Tokyo Sushi Bar in Epping is my new favourite as it has really affordable prices with generous portions. The sushi and sashimi was really fresh and thickly cut too, so try it out if you get a chance.
