The falling leaves drift by my window
The falling leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburnt hands I used to hold
Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall
– Johnny Mercer, American songwriter
On a recent weekend to the Blue Mountains, Mysaucepan wanted to explore beyond Leura, Katoomba and Blackheath. So on our last day, we drove to Mount Tomah, a leisurely half hour drive from Leura.
It isn’t quite the thick of autumn yet but the deciduous trees are beginning to change into a beautiful mix of yellow, orange, crimson and gold.
Autumn is one of my favourite seasons because of these colours and it reminds me of the beautiful song, Autumn Leaves. The music and lyrics were originally written in 1945. Legendary American songwriter and lyricist Johnny Mercer wrote the beautiful English lyrics in 1947.
Pictures really do paint a thousand words and I believe there is little need for words when the autumn colours are so vibrant and beautiful.
Listen to Eva Cassidy‘s hauntingly beautiful rendition of this song as you walk through the Mount Tomah Botanic Garden. For me, it was an exhilarating experience listening to this song whilst walking through this beautiful garden.

Such a wistful song. I like your photos – it looks like such a gorgeous garden!
It’s a beautiful song with such simple yet meaningful lyrics.
Oh woooow, Chopin… You’ve really done it with this one. I just realised that I actually held my breath a few times admiring your photos. I can’t imagine how much more gorgeous they are in real life if the photos are literally as breathtaking as this already. You couldn’t have picked a better anthem for this post with the sweet, sweet sound of Eva Cassidy. Beautiful. My Mum would really, really love to be here, hope I can bring her here one day. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed the walk. I suspect this garden will be even more beautiful come May when the autumn colours explode in all its glory.
Autumn, just delicious!
The first photo is so extraordinary it is difficult to believe that nature is able to produce such miraculous colours! Thank you for this magical walk.
I start to really appreciate this kind of travel posts more especially after writing mine. It’s so fun to read but it’s not easy to write one, at least for me. You always have a complete story with gorgeous pictures. I need a post in mind to take pictures and travel. This is a beautiful place and your flower photos are stunning!
What a breathtaking place to explore and get lost in. The flowers are so striking and magical looking.
Eva Cassidy’s version of Autumn Leaves is one of my favourite recordings/songs of all time. I also love her take of Fields of Gold Perhaps you could find a sunflower patch for that one?
I thought of Eva Cassidy’s rendition of Fields of Gold when I was writing this blogpost and wondered about the images. I need to find a mighty big sunflower patch for that but I think the beautiful sea of yellow canola fields in Orange might just do the trick.
These gardens are so beautiful aren’t they! we really enjoyed walking around them
Those pictures are all gorgeous, but I especially love the one of the moss growing on the side of the path. Stunning. Looks like something out of Middle Earth!
Such beautiful photos! Very breathtaking!
That’s a really calm and soothing song to listen to as I scrolled down each of the photos. Really loved the detailed shot of the nook in the Botanic Gardens.
Very Beautiful Autumn pictures
Such a beautiful adventure. I love Autumn too, it is so calming and colourful. This is also true of your photos.
I just remembered the seasons are flipped in Australia. What lovely Fall colors!
Such beautiful pictures! You truly have captured the beauty of Autumn
love your flowers and leaves shots!
Autumn is such a beautiful season – thanks for sharing your photos.
Oh! Thank you so much for this virtual tour at the botanic garden…I really enjoyed…so pretty the colors of the leaves and the variety of flowers. I wish I could “smell” it
Again, thanks for the tour and hope you have a wonderful week ahead!
Spring over here, autumn over there … such simple things just amaze me.
Thank you for all those beautiful pictures! This was just what I needed today! 😀
Beautiful photos and looks like it’s definately worth the trip (I’ll be visiting Australia, including Sydney in August-September). Personally autumn is my fav. season aswell. Though here in Finland it’s September-October months that are my favorites. Warm enough days and chilly “romantic” nights
