Ribs & Burgers Rhodes
I love summer for all the different reason that I enjoy the mild winters in Sydney – long hot days on the beach with a few cold beers is pretty hard to beat.
Throw in the Aussie BBQ with few steaks and you will have John Travolta singing out ‘summer lovin’, had me a blast!!!’
The Seagrass Boutique Hospitality Group owns and operates The Meat & Wine Co steakhouses in Darling Harbour and InterContinental at Circular Quay. In addition, the group also has five Ribs & Burgers restaurants around strategic locations all over Sydney ~ Neutral Bay, Bondi, Eastgardens, Central Park and at The Star in Sydney’s casino. So perhaps it is no coincidence they have chosen to launch their sixth restaurant in the height of summer when we are all craving for some sizzle on the BBQ.
With a kind invitation from Seagrass BHG, Mysaucepan and I are here for lunch today to check out Ribs & Burgers’ newest addition in Rhodes.
Located right at the front entrance into Rhodes Shopping Centre, this restaurant opened at 11am on Tuesday 10 December 2013 to an eagerly awaited fanfare – the first 100 customers will get to enjoy a free burger each week for the whole year!!
This offer certainly got the attention of pundits who formed a long queue at the restaurant since 9am that morning.
If you love hamburgers and chargrllled ribs, this restaurant is calling out to you.
The choice for burgers is quite extensive on a menu that features original beef mince patty, cheese, mexican, chilli, bacon and cheese and cajun chicken.
There are six more Butcher choices for burgers – steakhouse, veggie, Atlantic salmon, lamb, wagyu, cajun chicken and for those abstaining from carbohydrates, there’s also a naked burger without the buns.
The choices for ribs are pork ribs, beef ribs, lamb ribs and pork riblets.
The indoor space is bright and fairly spacious. I spot an obligatory hand basin which comes in handy after finger indulgence with chargrilled ribs.
Order your food at the counter and the waiter will bring a sauce holder that is a cross between a teapot and bucket holding chilli sauce, BBQ sauce and eating utensils.
A passionfruit milkshake is so rich and thick with a big scoop of vanilla ice-cream, it is calling for a larger straw.
Butcher’s salad is baby cos, purple cabbage, tomato, cucumber, capsicum and Spanish onion in an Italian style dressing of olive oil and lemon juice.
The friendly kitchen staff obliges me with a photo of their action behind the grill.
They are the culprits responsible for those irresistible aromas of BBQ ribs wafting through the kitchen exhaust system. We can detect those aromas and follow our noses even as we are walking halfway down Rider Boulevard towards the restaurant.
A huddle of deep-fried onion rings is different from the larger style of beer battered rings. I prefer these ones because they are thin and crisp without being greasy.
Mysaceuapan‘s cajun chicken burger is a grilled chicken breast patty with iceberg lettuce, avocado, chilli mayonnaise and sesame seed bun. Smoky flavours are good although this burger needs a little more seasoning.
The ribs have been marinated and slow-cooked for eight hours with a secret basting sauce.
You can have a choice of either chips or a cabbage salad with your chargrilled ribs. For me, that is a no-brainer as to which I would choose.
The porb ribs are placed over the chips which are delightfully crispy. I quickly remove all the chips from under the pork ribs because this kind of ‘steam trap’ is notorious for turning crispy chips into soggy ones within minutes.
The meat is tender although just a tad dry. A waiter informs me they have been extremely busy since opening a week ago and it could be due to the basting process where more marinade sauce could have made the difference.
Nevertheless, the ribs are tasty with a slather of BBQ sauce. It is finger-licking and lip-smackingly good.
There is already a good selection of Japanese, Chinese, dumpling bar and burritos at the food court at Rhodes Shopping Centre. But the queue building up during lunch tells me this restaurant is already a hit with the locals.
